Genoa had a man dismissed in the closing minutes as they
drew 1-1 at home to Fiorentina Saturday in Italian Serie A action.
Fiorentina are sixth on 32 points, two adrift of the Europa League
zone, while Genoa sit seventh on 29 from 21 games.
Genoa went ahead on 14 minutes as a deflection from Stefano Sturaro
hit the post and the head of goalkeeper Ciprian Tatarusanu before
inflating the net.
Khouma Babacar had a first attempt to equalize saved and Genoa's
Juraj Kucka forced a difficult save in a first half that on 37
minutes saw Nicola Rizzoli, the 2014 World Cup final referee, pull a
muscle and be replaced by the fourth official, taking his place for
the remainder of the game.
La Viola's efforts paid off on 54 minutes as Gonzalo Rodriguez nodded
home a deflected cross, but Genoa missed with Sturaro before their
substitute Maxime Lestienne shook the woodwork.
Striker Alberto Gilardino, a new arrival alongside Alessandro
Diamanti, came on for Fiorentina, who did not profit after Nicolas
Burdisso was handed a second booking nine minutes from time.
Late action sees second-place Roma (42) at home to lowly Empoli.
Leaders Juventus (49) play Sunday at Udinese.
