Senegal's elimination from the Africa Cup of Nations has led to speculation about the future of their French coach Alain Giresse. The former France international Giresse has been in charge of the 2002 World Cup quarter-finalists since 2012. His contract expires on February 8. Senegal failed to qualify for the 2013 Afcon and the 2014 World Cup. They have now failed to meet the national football federation target of making the quarter-finals in Equatorial Guinea, going out after a 2-0 defeat against Algeria Tuesday. However, the team has also been seem as immature as eight of the 11 starters Tuesday were playing in their first Afcon. "Since the 2006 edition in Egypt, the national team cannot pass the first round. There a great need to see the cause of that evil dogging our Lions," local sports analyst Moussa Gaye told dpa. "It's time for Alain Giresse to resign and so that we rebuild our team." Senegal's exit was also bad news for those back home who had hoped to cash in an a possible football euphoria. "I had prepared a lot of gadgets in the effigy of the national team, but now their elimination has ruined my business, it's over for me," hawker Etienne Ndiaye said. |
