 Alexander Khoroshilov captured the first
alpine World Cup victory of his career by winning the Tuesday night
slalom and giving Russia their first win in an alpine skiing event in
nearly 34 years.
The 30-year-old Khoroshilov used an outstanding first run and held on
for a combined winning time of 1 minute 46.39 seconds at the
Schladming slalom.
Stefano Gross of Italy finished second 1.44 seconds behind
Khoroshilov, while Germany's Felix Neureuther grabbed third place,
1.51 seconds adrift.
Khoroshilov, who was 0.79 seconds faster than second-placed
Neureuther in the first run, picked up the second podium finish of
his career following his third place at the Are slalom last month in
Sweden. Khoroshilov has now collected eight top-10 finishes this
season.
It was Russia's first World Cup victory since Alexander Zhirov won
the giant slalom in Laax, Switzerland, on March 28, 1981.
Gross collected his third podium finish since January 11 - which was
his first top-three placing since February 2012.
Neureuther claimed his eighth top-three finish of the season - all in
the slalom - to extend his lead in the slalom World Cup standings.
The German has collected 540 points, while Austrian Marcel Hirscher
is second with 474 after finishing 14th in Schladming.
Hirscher retained his lead in the overall World Cup standings with
1,014 points ahead of Norway's Kjetil Jansrud, who has 834 points.
But Neureuther jumped from fifth to third with 662 points.
