There are no formal cost estimates for a quarter of the 56 projects in the so-called Responsibility Matrix for the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympics. With a little over 18 months left to go, the Olympic Public Authority (APO) issued a report Wednesday in which the total cost of sports facilities for the event was estimated at 6.6 billion real (just over 2.5 billion dollars). The report, posted on the website www.apo.gov.br, says allmost two-thirds of all works (about 1.6 billion dollars) are set to be funded privately. These figures entail a 1.4-per-cent increase in the budget, compared to the report that was issued in July. According to the APO, that increase is due to four projects to brace the power supply at venues including a new golf course in the Barra da Tijuca neighbourhood. Although 14 projects needed for the Olympics are still without cost estimates, APO president Fernando de Azevedo e Silva said that major progress had been made, since a year ago that number was as high as 24. These 56 projects are in fact contained in only one of three budgets for the Olympics. The total cost of preparations for Rio 2016 amounts to about 14.5 billion dollars. This includes organizing committee expenditures (almost 2.7 billion dollars) and investment worth almost 9.3 billion dollars, in the form of infrastructure that will be the event's legacy. |
